The Homecoming
A man in search of his past.
The film
Bernd Thiele would love to be “normal”, but his mother drank alcohol during pregnancy and damaged his brain. As a baby he was taken from his family by the Berlin youth welfare office. Bernd doesn’t know his mother, his father or his sister – he knows almost nothing about his past and his origins, because the 38-year-old spent his entire childhood and youth in children’s homes and with foster parents.
“Sometimes I think I’m a clone – that I’m not a real person at all,” says the wiry man sadly, who today looks after the pigs on an organic farm. But Bernd is determined to reclaim his identity and sets off with his quick-witted colleague Joann on a journey home into the past. Via Hamburg the two country men want to travel to Berlin, the city where Bernd was born – because there is a hot lead!
“With their wide-awake powers of observation and their curiosity about the strange big city and the adventure, Bernd and Joann deliver the bons mots as a funny buddy duo that make this road movie a pleasure.”
Bianka Piringer, kino-zeit.de
“The film is sometimes touching, then devastating, and then hilarious again.”
Knut Cordsen, Bayerischer Rundfunk
“A moving documentary.”
